Every area in England and Wales is required to give local people an opportunity to have a say on how maternity services should be run through a group called the Maternity Service Liaison Committees (MSLC). Maternity Northants is the name of Northamptonshire’s MSLC and it gives local people a chance to work with professional and get involved in planning and developing services and monitoring progress.
We are very keen to welcome new members to our group. Maternity Northants is for anyone with an interest in maternity services, not just mums or dads but grandparents or anyone else who has experience of or interest in maternity services and would like to be involved in shaping them locally. The group gives people an opportunity to gain a real insight into how maternity services are run at our two Maternity Units (Northampton General Hospital Trust and Kettering General Hospital Foundation Trust) and offers the opportunity of working with health professionals and local voluntary groups to plan services. The work of the group includes all aspects of maternity including breast feeding, teenage pregnancies, home births and health during pregnancy and we are interested in everyone’s experiences and views.
Being involved in Maternity Northants should be a rewarding experience and won’t mean a huge commitment or lots of work – unless you want it to! The group meets every three months in different towns across the county for about two hours. The role of chairperson is shared by a consultant obstetrician and a lay member and the membership varies but includes midwives, voluntary sector services, the Primary Care Trust and of course local people who want to get involved. You don’t need to attend every meeting but it helps if you are a regular attendee so that you can develop your understanding over time. Sometimes we set up small working groups for specific projects but you don’t have to take part in anything you don’t want to or spend more time than you are able to.
There is no payment for taking part in Maternity Northants but we will repay travel expenses and parking fees. We are very happy to have babies and small children join us for the meeting.
Thank you for your interest in Maternity Northants. If you would like to join the group please email firstname.lastname@example.org
You can also contact us if you are unable to attend a meeting but you would like a specific issue to be raised. You might also want to arrange to meet with one of the group members to discuss the group in more detail and share any specific concerns/queries. You can also arrange to come along and observe a meeting before deciding whether to join the group. We look forward to meeting you.
