Healthy holiday packing for Northamptonshire holidaymakers

Holidaymakers in Northamptonshire who are travelling abroad this summer are being encouraged to pack essential medical items in their suitcase to avoid a bad bout of diarrhoea, sunstroke or accidents spoiling their holiday. The timely holiday advice has been issued by NHS Nene Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to ensure people in Northamptonshire have a healthy holiday abroad.

Although holiday health may be one of the last things on people's minds when packing, a visit to the local pharmacy before heading off either home or abroad should feature in everyone's preparations.

A basic first aid kit will help with minor ailments, such as stomach upsets, allergies, headaches, sunburn, insect bites, aches and sprains and strains.

The really useful interactive first aid kit guide at www.nhs.uk can help ensure holidaymakers have everything they need and local pharmacists can also provide excellent advice.

Dr Matthew Davies, Medical Director at NHS Nene CCG, said:

“Nothing will ruin your trip faster than feeling unwell or having an accident. So, although packing a first aid kit with a few invaluable basics might seem low down on your to-do list, make it a priority as medical mishaps can and will happen when you travel abroad. These should include painkillers, anti-diarrhoea tablets, antihistamines, antiseptic cream, handwash, plasters and dressings.

“If you take regular medicines on prescription, it's important that you have enough medication to cover your holiday period. Carrying all medicines in their original container with labels intact, and a copy of your prescription written by your doctor at all times is also a must.

“If you're travelling in Europe be sure to take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), available free at http://www.ehic.org.uk. It will enable you to access state-provided healthcare across most of Europe at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free.  It will also cover treatment until you return to the UK. You can download the EHIC smartphone app from the European Commission website so you can easily access the information while you are abroad. If you are travelling to countries outside of the EU, it's important that you have appropriate health insurance before you travel.”
